Builders high up on scaffolding above the chancel arch making good cracks in the wall uncovered what they thought might be faint remains of some medieval wall paintings to add to St Christopher and the three living and three dead on the North Wall.
Our medieval wall painting specialist Dr Andrea Kirkham has confimed they are medieval and has started work on a preliminary exploration and treatment.
So far we have an angel with frizzy hair; a pair of feet, presumably Jesus’ as they have stigmata, and some symbols of the Passion. Andrea describes the paintings as “intriguing”.
